CLIENT: Leeds Station DOL2 55

The Dark Arches structure examination, a series of historic arches over the River Aire, under Leeds Station.

Background

SES Structures Examination Services were engaged to perform a detailed structural examination, leveraging our extensive experience. Given the complexities involved, SES assigned STE7 examiner, Jack Williams, to lead the project. Jack’s expertise in underwater inspections and meticulous approach ensured a safe and thorough examination process throughout. The integrity of these arches is crucial for the safety and operational efficiency of the station, which serves thousands of passengers daily.

Implementation

Site visits undertaken over a number of shifts posed significant challenges due to its size and unique location over water. Conducting detailed underwater examinations presented inherent risks and required specialised expertise. Ensuring the safety of the inspection team while maintaining the integrity and thoroughness of the detailed examination was paramount.

Here is how SES tackled the challenge;

Daytime Inspections

Conducting detailed inspections during daylight hours to assess the condition of the visible portions of the structure.

Underwater Examinations

Utilising specialised diving equipment and techniques to inspect the submerged sections of the Dark Arches. This required adherence to strict safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with underwater work.

Safety Protocols

Implementing rigorous safety measures to protect the inspection team, particularly during the underwater phases of the examination where dry suits, life jackets and access/egress by boat were utilised.

Results

The examination was successfully completed, providing Amco Giffen and their client, Network Rail, with comprehensive insights into the structural condition of the Dark Arches. The detailed report highlighted areas requiring maintenance or repair, enabling proactive measures to ensure the continued safety and reliability of the structure serving Leeds Station.
