Cast Iron Arch bridge MDL1, Dewsbury, detailed structural inspection.

Background

SES executed a critical structural inspection as part of an examination work package managed by Amco Giffen on behalf of Network Rail. The structure a three-span cast iron arch bridge in Dewsbury, which carries the MDL1 line over the River Calder and the Calder & Hebble Navigation canal. The bridge is supported by masonry stone abutments, making it a vital piece of infrastructure for the rail network.

Challenge

The primary challenge was an inspection of the rib arches, which had previously shown signs of cracked paintwork, indicating potential underlying damage to the cast iron. The task required specialised skills and certifications due to the complexity and safety concerns of accessing the bridge.

Solution

SES deployed a team of highly trained engineers with the necessary qualifications, including STE04/07 certifications for rope access, ensuring a thorough and safe inspection of the structure.

Here is how SES tackled the challenge;

Preparation and Safety Measures

Ensuring all engineers were equipped with appropriate safety gear and certifications for rope access.

Initial Inspection

Conducting a detailed visual inspection of the bridge, focusing on the areas with previously noted cracked paintwork.

Analysis

Inspecting the cast iron for any underlying cracks beneath the paint. This included identifying two new cracks that had developed since the last inspection.

Documentation

Recording all findings meticulously and recommending an increased inspection frequency to monitor the structure’s condition more closely.

Results

The thorough inspection led to the identification of two new cracks in the cast iron arch, in addition to the previously noted paintwork issues. Detailed documentation of the inspection findings was provided, enabling informed decisions regarding maintenance and repair strategies. These findings were promptly reported to Network Rail, and highlighting the need for increased inspection frequency to ensure ongoing safety and structural integrity.

Feedback

“SES’s meticulous and safe execution of the Dewsbury bridge assessment highlights their commitment to delivering precise surveys. The successful identification of new cracks and the comprehensive reporting provided crucial information for maintaining the safety and reliability of this important structure. This project exemplifies SES Structures Examination Service’s capability to manage complex assessments and deliver actionable insights for infrastructure maintenance and safety on behalf of Network Rail.”
